Charlotte, and Henry boarded the ship, the George Washington, the same ship that President Woodrow Wilson traveled on.\u00a0 Travelers were divided into groups of 30 for listing on manifests.\u00a0 Each manifest list recorded the passenger\u2019s manifest number, name, gender, age, marital status, ethnicity and place of residence.\u00a0 One manifest list showed the first four as follows:<\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>Before departure, passengers were given a 4\u00bd\u201d x 6 \u00bc\u201d \u201cInspection Card\u201d with the under title of <em>Immigrants and Steerage Passengers<\/em> listing the port and date of departure, the name of the ship, the immigrant\u2019s name, and their last residence.\u00a0 These cards show that the Lifferths departed from Bremen<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> in northern Germany near the North Sea.<\/h5><h5>E.E.\u2019s card was stamped with the number 19 8802, but Gretchen\u2019s did not bear this stamp.\u00a0 Both cards were stamped with \u201cGeorge Washington,\u201d the date of departure \u201c18. Okt. 1921,\u201d \u201cSpecially Examined,\u201d \u201cUnited States Public Health Service,\u201d and \u201cU.S. Public Health Service Ellis Island, N.Y.C.\u201d<\/h5><h5>The back of the card had the printed word \u201cVaccinated\u201d in addition to the instruction, \u201cKeep this Card to avoid detention at Quarantine and on Railroads in the United States\u201d printed in eight languages. The backs of E.E. and Gretchen\u2019s cards also had three stamps: \u201cDeloused,\u201d \u201cBathed,\u201d and \u201cConsulado De Espana\u2014Bremen.\u201d<\/h5><h5>The ship George Washington left port from Bremerhaven on Tuesday, October 18, 1921, and arrived in New York and Ellis Island eleven days later, on October 29, 1921.\u00a0 As shown on the inspection cards, E.E. and his family were steerage passengers, which meant they traveled in the least expensive accommodations.\u00a0 They slept and, for the most part, traveled below the deck, but they were allowed on deck if they wanted to go there.\u00a0 They enjoyed going out on the deck and watching the sun set on the ocean ahead of them each night\u2026.<\/h5><pre><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> The actual port was likely in Bremerhaven, which has a harbor to the sea, while the city of Bremen sits a short distance inland on the River Weser; this river empties into the sea at Bremerhaven.<\/pre>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2a3841c elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2a3841c\" E.E.\u2019s card was stamped with the number 19 8802, but Gretchen\u2019s did not bear this stamp.\u00a0 Both cards were stamped with \u201cGeorge Washington,\u201d the date of departure \u201c18. Okt. 1921,\u201d \u201cSpecially Examined,\u201d \u201cUnited States Public Health Service,\u201d and \u201cU.S. Public Health Service Ellis Island, N.Y.C.\u201d The back of the card had the printed word \u201cVaccinated\u201d in addition to the instruction, \u201cKeep this Card to avoid detention at Quarantine and on Railroads in the United States\u201d printed in eight languages.
